Staňková, Štěpánka ; Kalfiřtová, Eva (advisor) ; Machleidtová, Silva (referee)
Štěpánka Staňková Pedf UK, Aj - FJ Development aid in education in selected former French colonies of Sahel-Benin Union Abstract The following thesis on Development aid in education in selected former French colonies of Sahel-Benin Union presents the situation in Education of former French colonies in sub- Saharan Africa with the particular focus on Benin, Burkina Faso and Niger. The sources and the donors of the development aid are described; special attention has been paid to the international organisations, to the European Union and to the development aid provided by France and the Czech Republic. The aim of this thesis is to present the critical state of Education in former French colonies in Africa and the effort to solve the situation made by international organizations and France in particular. The main sources of information are the international studies and evaluation reports elaborated by the expert teams of the United Nations and the World Bank, together with direct personal experience made in the described countries. Key words: Development Aid, education, sub-Saharan Africa, Benin, Burkina Faso and Niger
Geophysical and remote sensing methodologies applied to the analysis of regolith and geology in Burkina Faso, West Africa
Metelka, Václav ; Ježek, Josef (advisor) ; Miller, John (referee) ; Martelet, Guillaume (referee) ; de Kemp, Eric (referee)
The oldest parts of continents, so-called cratons, are the focus of worldwide research not only because they represent primary constraints for our understanding of the early evolution of the Earth, but also because of their significant mineral potential. This work contributes to the understanding of the geological and geomorphological evolution of the West African Craton, by an integrated analysis of airborne geophysical and satellite remote sensing data constrained by field structural, lithological, geophysical, and geomorphological observations acquired around Houndé, Boromo and Banfora greenstone belts and associated granitoid domains in western Burkina Faso. The results of this integration suggest that the granitoid domains of western Burkina Faso are formed by numerous small- to medium-sized plutons, and the magnetic data provided a better definition of the actual pluton shapes. Airborne gamma ray spectrometry data aided in the mapping process in areas with less regolith cover. Three deformation events (D1-D3) can be distinguished in western Burkina Faso. A megacrystic tholeiitic basalt unit allowed us to establish stratigraphic correlations between the two belts and propose a crustal scale anticline (D1). The D1 penetrative structures, resulting from an E-W to WNW-oriented compression are...
The effect of climate change on the effect of state security: An analysis of Burkina Faso and Djibouti
Alexandru, Luca ; Riegl, Martin (advisor) ; Doboš, Bohumil (referee)
This thesis examines the extent to which climate change is able to affect the security of states, with Burkina Faso and the Republic of Djibouti chosen as the case studies for this investigation. While the general effects of climate change on security are understood, the academic community appears to disagree on the subject of conflict-generation via climactic pressures. Consequently, the analysis is divided into two sections: The first part utilizes over 2,000 individual events collected by the Armed Conflict and Event Data program and examines the relationship between climate change and their occurrence. This is done firstly through a preliminary keyword analysis, then through a multivariate regression analysis of the relevant climate change factors. The second part takes a pseudo-qualitative approach by merging the Fragile State Index methodology and a weighted systems model in order to calculate values for each relevant state dimension that has been affected, thereby numerically quantifying the effect. The results indicate that currently, weak to moderate negative effects may be observed on the two states, depending on the security dimension examined. The economic and sociodemographic aspects appear to be most susceptible to environmental pressures.

Development of Bt Cotton supply
Pokorný, Lukáš
This bachelor's thesis deals with the issue of genetically modified crops, particularly Bt cotton and its adoption in Burkina Faso. At first, the influence of various aspects of globalization and multinational corporations' activities on developing countries is described. It is followed by information about both traditional cotton and Bt-cotton and its cultivation. Furthermore, the basic methods of plant hybridization including genetic modification are introduced. Finally, the impacts of Bt cultivation in Burkina Faso economy are analysed.
